Men's health magazine

For this this magazine I believe its target audience is aimed at males because they may want advise on how to lose weight from one of their favoruite artists. Also, from the psychographics, mainstreamers may be interested in this as they already want to fit in with society and trends so would want to lose excess fat like Ben Drew did. Potentially, strugglers would view this magazine as a source of inspiration to find something to do or something similar to their idol. Ben Drew's lifestyle is displayed in this magazine so his target audience can now get closer to his life and get a better understanding of the person behind the protests.

The article does more than entertain because it provides the viewer with information about Ben Drew's lifestyle. His audience may have not known about some of things he had to do to become as successful as he is. Therefore, with the determination he had to lose weight, viewers can feed off of the determination and eagerness to become successful.

The intro sentence would attract the viewer as they would be surprised about Ben Drew's weight loss. They would use this to attract his fan base which would then (if it works) attract the audience of people who want to lose weight.

The way the interview is structured would entice the reader because the question is a sub heading in bold and the answers and short which means the audience of Men's health would want to know how Ben Drew dealt with weight loss. Also, because the article releases Plan B from his political views and allows the audience to learn more about the man behind the his arguments.

We see cross promotion when Ben Drew talk about his political beliefs and how its portrayed in his film Ill manors.

NME magazine

The target audience for NME would be in the age range 16-30 because it attracts a rock audience (punks) and they usually are young people. Despite this, I believe the fans of Plan B, his beliefs and fans of hip hop would want to read this magazine to read what he said. From the demographics I think this would appeal to working class citizens as it may be able to relate to his beliefs and they would have the education and desire to read the magazine.

The article informs the reader on youth culture and his opinions about the government. He also subverts the dominant ideology about the council estate youth culture being worthless to society.

The interview only displays Plan B's perspective and we don't see any responses from David Cameron about Ill manors. This would appeal to the audience of Plan B because they probably would only want to listen/read his opinions in the interview.

The reader would want to keep reading this because he cross promotes his film and reveals some of the narrative which would appeal to his fan base that might want to watch his film.

The guardian

The article would appeal to upper/middle classes as the article slates Ill Manor significantly. They continuously disrespect the film and Ben Drew comparing it to similar films that they believe were unsuccessful. The audience of this article would agree with the dominant ideology about youth and crime being affiliated.

The article informs us about the riots in 2012 and The Guardian gives their opinions about the group of people (outcasters). It's a very negative approach to satisfy the reader's ideologies.

The article uses long paragraphs with each sentence probably because the audience of the newspaper would be able to read the whole article without losing focus and because they are interested in Plan B.

The article is formally structured to keep their educated audience interested in reading their newspaper. They use this language to take digs at Ben Drew but at the same time it reveals some background on Ben Drew. In addition, we see reference to his difficult childhood and how his movie relates to the area he grew up inferring the film reflects his life when he was younger. This is where the cross promotion comes from and there is also the reference to songs from his album 'Ill Manors' is featured in the film.

Daily Mail

Similar to The Guardian, the target audience would be from the age 25 and above. They would be of the upper/middle classes as they agree with the dominant ideology created by people in power. From the psychographics successful people would read this article.

This article, unlike The Guardian, absolutely tears Plan B's efforts in producing this film by giving it a negative review. It doesn't only mention it's disagreement with his political beliefs but also his music and film. It's as if they have strong hate for him. I believe this article is here to inform their audience about what Plan B is teaching youth culture but twisting his words. They would probably suggest Plan B made the film to influence the youth to commit crime.

To reinforce what they are saying, they chose pictures from the film that symbolises crime and the description for each image explains why it's dangerous.

The audience would agree with the dominant ideology shown in the article as they are right winged.

The Jonathan Ross show used to be aired on BBC One until he was released from them in 2010 because of the offensive things he had said. It now appears on ITV 1 on a Saturday night. The alternative audience to his music audience would be the target audience of the interview because they watch the show already. If they hear he will be on the show, it may persuade them to hear what he has to say about the lifestyle of council estate kids. From the demographics people of the working class, lower middle class and some of the middle class may watch this as they would watch the show or want to hear Plan B's views. The audience appeal here is the interviewer attempting to understand the beliefs and ideologies of the celebrity. For example, Jonathan asked Plan B to explain what the Government are/aren't doing to help youngsters and why they are the blame for the riots. But also, the interviewer would shed some light on some serious stories to make the celebrity feel comfortable.Plan B is represented as a successful man who started from the absolute bottom to turn his life into the right direction. The direction that has become a dominant ideology, success. Ben Drew does his best to protest (not very forcefully as its an interview) for people with very little hope in becoming successful . His ideologies are exposed and portrayed to the audience which is about helping council estate kids

3) What are Plan B's beliefs/politics? What are his values/ideologies? Explain your answers.

Looking at Plan B's songs you could say that they are quite political and you can really see how he's trying to show off the negatives of his and others community to show the harsh reality to what needs changing and what the politicians are ignoring. In his song Ill Manors he makes references to certain politicians in particular which shows his aversion to the government. A quote that Plan B had in his film Ill Manors "we are all products of our environment" is quite  significant as it shows not all environments are the same and he believes the one he came from and which so many other are coming from is not stable enough to support these humans as it will just turn them out how everyone sees them as thugs and "chavs" but the believes more can be done to help the environment that they come from.

He also goes on to talk about a vicious circle, if you go on to call these kids derogatory terms then they are going to hate you and your going to hate them because they are different. This is the fuel to the fire as it works two ways, for example the people didn't start the London riots for no reason as it was down to the long term racial stereotyping and negative reinforcement that people had that led to the violent outbreaks.

4) Who is the target audience of the TEDx lecture? Demographics? Psychographics? How do you know? How does this compare to the audience for his music/films?

The target audience is unusual in this case as a typical Ted audience would be for people that fit into the psychographic group of aspires and explorers and they may not be Plan B's typical audience as some of the groups that may fit into is struggler's who aren't necessarily an audience for Ted lectures, however this could be good as the people at the Tedx lecture would need to be ones educated about this matter so they don't just see one side of what the mass media has to say and stereotype they can hear it first hand and un-changed. I think that that a usual demographic for Ted lecture may be a higher percentage of females, roughly 55/45% or 60/40%. You could also suggest that the audience may be slightly older, approximately around the 40-50 mark, this is because they may just have more spare time and be more interested in new topics than younger people.

5) What does Plan B say about the media? Explain how this can be linked to Cohen's media theory of moral panicsRead this summary of moral panics and the definition from Wikipedia and use them in your answer.

In terms of moral panics there is a second stage which is the involvement in finding the "folk devil" this is someone who is portrayed by the media as the problem and the reason for the outbreak of the moral panic. The folk devil in this case people may be referring to is the damaged youth. Plan B goes on to say about the media that they demonstrate the youth in the media in such a way that everyone is falling for it but if  you were to actually go and talk to the kids you'd know and understand that you can't always base judgements and form stereotypes on a group of people without knowing both sides of the story. In this case the moral panics surrounding the young people could and can be avoided but too much negative stereotyping and scapegoating is preventing the youth from seeing positivity and therefore staying in the vicious cycle the media has helped to start.

music video

 Media Forms
From looking at the mise-en-scene of this music video we can see that the setting of it is in a run-down area of London. It also depicts some real life scene from the London riots which was in the same area. If we were look to look at Andy Medhurst's Theory of stereotyping on the short hand we could apply this here as we see all of the negative stereotypes of council estates and the people that live there in a short space of time as it is in a music video which is significant,Examples of the stereotypes include Plan B saying "Urban Safari", Safaris are often used to connote wildlife in jungles or deserts so to compare the people living in this part of London to that makes them seen like they're animals just to be looked at.

Furthermore, the editing used it typical in a music video as it is fast paced and almost like a montage sequence showing various fast paced shots. This also helps us to imply the genre of the music video as this sort of editing and cinematography is commonly used in rap videos. The props and costumes used also helps us to imply a genre, for example we see the use of tracksuits and hoodies being worn by people on the estate, this is another example of Medhurst's shorthand theory as wearing this sort of attire is associated with bad behaviour and troublesome/violent youths. This is illustrative as the music almost seems to be reinforcing the negative stereotypes in-order to strengthen the points of the music video about not enough is being done to help the people that come form this environment.

 Media Representations

The rioters are also represented in this music video but as the way most people would expect to see them as you wouldn't expect to see a middle class white man joining in in the London riots and this reinforces that. The reason why we see the rioters as "chavs" and people on "council estates" is because these representations are formed from the ideologies that have been passed down form the opinion leaders which are usually the government and higher class white people. This links to Levi Strauss's theory on representation and ideology. Strauss also wrote about the producer of the text holding the set of values and beliefs but this doesn't link well with what Plan B may have been trying to communicate as his views of the politicians in the music video are overshadowed by the erratic violence caused by the rioters which he is saying is the government's fault. As a result we may see Plan B being hypocritical as what he is trying to resolve may cause further violence as he is showing  what fun could be had of looting and rioting.

 Media Audiences
First of all, i believe the typical audience for a Plan B song would be older teenagers and young adults, this is because Rap music is typically aimed at this segment. Also there would be a higher male audience in comparison to females as Plan B has more fans that are male as more of his songs may appeal to them. Because of this specific audience different groups of people will get different feelings about this music video. For example an 18 year old male may feel like Plan B is communicating with him directly due to the direct address and because he may idolise him as an artist making him and his loyal fan audience followers from an opinion leader. This is based on the two step flow model  which also suggests that the opinion leader (Plan B) is influenced by the mass media but in this case we see it being subverted as Plan B doesn't seem to follow what the media says, especially about the working and lower classes.

 Media Institutions
For a music video as big as this you would expect there to be different types of media promoting it,such as print, broadcast and E-media. This is because it was distributed by the conglomerate Time Warner. As a result they would be able to finance the promotion on various media platforms but the most effective way in my opinion would be on social media. This is because it would be able to reach a lot more of Plan B's fans as the majority of them are young teenagers and are avid users of social media. By using E-media to promote the song it may also be able to promote the film that goes with it as there wouldn't be any other large costs as posing to social network sites such as facebook and instagram is free. Cross promoting is called synergy and Plan B is able to do this very well as he could use the promotion of the film to further his music career and use the music to promote the film in-order to get his message across.
